Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
